      The Japanese yen has advanced against all 16 of its major forex trading peers today (August 27th), with investors turning to safe-haven investments as speculation mounts that the US is preparing to take military action in Syria.

     Secretary of state John Kerry said president Barack Obama is keen to hold the Syrian government accountable for the suspected chemical weapons attack near Damascus on August 21st, which he labelled a "moral obscenity".

     Data released yesterday showing that US durable goods orders dropped by more than expected in July has reignited speculation regarding the Federal Reserve's intentions to reduce monetary stimulus.

     The bank had been widely expected to announce next month that it is scaling back its quantitative easing programme, but the figures showed a 7.3 per cent decline in orders in July - the largest fall since August 2012.
